Private vs. Unknown Calls: What's the Difference?

"Private," "No Caller ID," "Unknown", these labels get mixed up a lot. Here's what each one actually means and which ones Traceback can reveal.

In short: a private (No Caller ID) call is one where the caller deliberately hides their number, while an unknown call is one where no number is available to show. Traceback is built to reveal both.

Private / No Caller ID Calls

This is a caller intentionally hiding their number, often by dialing a prefix before your number. Your screen shows "No Caller ID," "Private," or "Withheld" instead of a number. The caller made a choice to stay hidden.

Unknown Calls

An unknown call is one where your phone doesn't have a number to display at all, it shows "Unknown." This isn't always intentional on the caller's side; sometimes the number just isn't passed through to your phone.

Which Ones Traceback Reveals

Traceback reveals both No Caller ID (private) and Unknown calls. When one of these comes in and you decline it, the call forwards to us and we reveal the real number, plus a name if it's in our database. Spoofed (faked) numbers are not included.

Privacy Note

Traceback only uses the call details needed to reveal these calls. We don't record or read your conversations.

Troubleshooting

My screen says "Private", is that supported? Yes. "Private," "No Caller ID," and "Withheld" all mean a hidden number, which Traceback can reveal.

It says "Unknown" and didn't reveal. Confirm call forwarding is active and that you declined the call so it forwards to us before voicemail.

A real number showed but seemed fake. That may be spoofing, which Traceback doesn't reveal, it only unmasks hidden and unknown calls.
